We are delighted that The D-Word is a member of the new end-of-life care coalition formed between the National Council of Palliative Care and the Department of Health

Welcome to The D-Word.

It's not easy to know how to talk about dying.

There is often awkwardness, embarrassment and fear, which means we tend to shy away from connecting to those who are grieving, or those who are dying.

But our inability to face up to death only serves to increase the isolation and loneliness of those in distress, as well as our own.

This website is dedicated to offering simple, practical guidance, information and resources to find better ways of talking openly and honestly about the D-Word.

Few of us have much idea of how to handle dying, or have access to a context, language or ritual in which to safely place the dying experience.

The D-Word is a practical guide to support relatives, friends and carers who are coping with the distress and anxiety of someone nearing the end of life.
